Postpartum-Newborn Home Assessment Program
Postpartum-Newborn home visitation was developed to deliver health, social support, and/or educational services directly to families in their home. It provides a follow-up service for mothers and their newborns due to the quick discharge from the hospital many are experiencing in recent years. The home visitation can help reduce infant mortality (death), and improve the health of new mothers and their newborns.
The registered nurse can help identify signs and symptoms of existing and/or potential problems that may lead to illnesses or hospitalizations for the mother or newborn. These may include but are not limited to (for the mother): dehydration, elevated blood pressure, infected abdominal incision, signs and symptoms of a urinary tract infection, and phlebitis; and (for the newborn) yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice), dehydration, draining eyes, mouth infection (thrush), infected navel, abnormal heart sounds or rate, or abnormal respiratory sounds or rate.
The nurse will provide the family with community resources and make referrals to these as necessary. Our goal is to provide services within a timely manner usually within the first two weeks of the infant's birth before problems become irreversible or costly, and to promote the family's sense of control and participation in meeting their own health care needs.
The program is presently available to all new mothers and their newborns who reside in Robeson County. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, please contact:
