What is R.E.A.C.H.?

R.E.A.C.H (Robeson Enriching Academics for Children’s Health) is a collaborative program with the Public Schools of Robeson County, Robeson County School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), Robeson County Health Department, Robeson County Cooperative Extension, and Robeson County Partnership for Community Health. This project is funded through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity and Nutrition Branch. These partners will also be responsible for reviewing and awarding grant monies.

R.E.A.C.H to Eat Smart, Move More… NC is designed to increase physical activity and nutrition among children enrolled in Public Schools of Robeson County. Through this intervention, twenty five teachers will be eligible to receive $500.00 mini grants to incorporate physical activity and/or nutrition messages and materials into their curriculums in correlation with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Teachers will also be required to establish healthy eating and/or physical activity policies or environmental changes. Grant recipients will be notified by December 15, 2007.

What are the requirements to apply/receive a R.E.A.C.H. mini grant?

You must be a K-4 teacher employed with the Public Schools of Robeson County.

Projects and policies must be implemented by May 2007.

All mini grant recipients must demonstrate that they will use funding to promote healthy eating and/or physical activity within the classroom.

All mini grant applicants must demonstrate that they will incorporate physical activity and/or healthy eating policies or environmental changes in their classrooms.

Grantee applicants must have a signed approval of their principal to apply (signature line item provided on grantee application sheet).

Grantee applicants should make sure that their projects correlate with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

What are ideas or examples of fundable projects?

Some possible ideas are:

Using funding to purchase nutrition or physical activity materials or supplies for planned lessons- ie- a teacher submits a request to purchase fruits and vegetables for five lessons to educate students on fractions while incorporating healthy eating messages during the lesson. The teacher will supply an intended policy change in his/her application that his/her proposed policy change is that 10% of all lessons will include healthy eating messages, or that candy will not be distributed as an award.

Using funding to purchase balls or other exercise equipment to incorporate into a lesson plan. In this example, the teacher will supply a signed environmental change sheet stating that the environmental change is that equipment is provided to address physical activity.

Please note: Funding will not be granted to pay for staff or staff conferences/trainings.
