Community Health Assessment
The Community Health Assessment (CHA) is a process by which community members gain an understanding of the health concerns and healthcare systems of the community. This process is conducted by identifying, collecting, analyzing and disseminating information on community assets, strengths, resources and needs.
The CHA process is conducted every four years and serves as the foundation for improving and promoting the health of community members. The purpose of conducting a community health assessment is to utilize the citizens’ input to make informed decisions regarding the use of community resources, which directly and indirectly affect health.
In October 1998, the Robeson County Partnership for Community Health was awarded certification as a Healthy Carolinians Task Force by the North Carolina Governor’s Taskforce. To be eligible for Healthy Carolinas certification, a task force must conduct an assessment of the community’s health needs and assets, bring together a diverse group of community leaders, jointly decide what health issues are of greatest concern and develop action plans for responding to these concerns. The RCPCH was re-certified as a Healthy Carolinians Task Force in 2000, 2004 and 2009.
The community health assessment is an essential service of the public health department. It assists public health partners and policy makers in identifying unmet health care needs and developing action plans to meet those needs.
